Weezer's awesome internet mashup video

My god, it's all here. This may indeed be the best music video ever.

The Android will show us the way

Interesting that out of all the apps that SAI could have picked, it chose one that translates text messages. Odd that SAI didn't realize that Google's own gTalk already does this with machine translation. But more telling perhaps that people realize this is a key technology of the future. I want to talk to China or Iraq or Iran. People are interesting, just like me, no matter where they come from, and that's going to make this world better and smaller.

Android Apps Losers That Don't Suck (GOOG)

androidWe’ve picked out some of our favorites from the winners of Google’s Android app contest. But less than 3% of all applications made the cut, which means there were plenty of worthy entries that Google passed over. Here are three from the loser pile that caught our eye.

BabelFish: Text a friend in your language and automatically translate it to his.

Why it didn’t win: We suspect that this app just didn’t work that well, because most Web translation services don't. The judges may have also had an issue with the fact that Yahoo (via Alta Vista) already owns a Web translation service that uses the same name.

Book search winding down

Today we informed our partners that we are ending the Live Search Books and Live Search Academic projects and that both sites will be taken down next week. Books and scholarly publications will continue to be integrated into our Search results, but not through separate indexes.

This also means that we are winding down our digitization initiatives, including our library scanning and our in-copyright book programs. We recognize that this decision comes as disappointing news to our partners, the publishing and academic communities, and Live Search users.

The Day There Was No News

Thanks Kottke, I needed to see this. I'd watch CNN and the BBC more often if this was the case.

multi-tasking

multi-tasking, originally uploaded by Gleason.

So my buddy Chris had a baby last week which is totally awesome. Little girl, Abigail. Totally great. I love this photo for no other reason than I find myself doing the same thing - sling on, baby asleep, mow lawn.

Except for the mowing the lawn thing, I'm the same.

1997 on Twitter

1997 on Twitter, originally uploaded by Jrome.

Evan Williams twittered what he was up to in 1997. A pivotal (I guess) move to the Bay Area and to his future. I noticed Chris Messina's twitter somehow and followed it (@ev) back to Evan's original.

Intrigued by the process, I thought back. It was hard to condense in 140 characters what happened to me in 1997.

I had to leave out a lot... I decided to go back to CO for my final year of grad school as I sat beside my father's hospital bed, a bed he would never leave.

1997 was a pivotal year for me. Remarkable what a little twitter post could stir up. Check it out for yourself: http://summize.com/search?q=%40ev+%2B+1997

Update: Ev twittered about how many people recalled 1997...

Spray defuses standoff Officers' 'restraint' in incident praised
BY JAMES F. LOWE STAFF WRITER
News and information for Friday, May 09, 2008

NORTHAMPTON - Two city police officers are being praised after a potentially deadly standoff ended Wednesday without serious injuries.

Jeffrey Von Dauber and Stephen Digiammo rushed to the area of Straw Avenue in Florence about 2:17 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a suspicious man with a knife sitting on a bench near the bicycle path.

That man, according to police, was James E. Freund, 54, whose address is listed in court records the streets of Northampton. He had a folding knife in his pocket when the officers arrived on the scene, police said, and allegedly ignored commands to show his hands.

Though one officer pointed his sidearm at Freund and another readied his baton, the standoff was brought to an end with a quick blast of pepper spray.

Immigrant worker: No more money to Mexico

Eduardo Gutierrez stopped sending a few hundred dollars a month back to Mexico ever since U.S. gas prices soared. It's forced his ailing dad to sell off his goats to buy medicine. Gutierrez is like millions of immigrants who have cut the payments. "I kind of feel bad."

This is a test post, I wanted to see how easy it is to grab some news story and post it. Not too shabby. It would be nice if there were more advanced reference available within this editor.

It's been a really really long time since I dabbled with the Flock browser's blog post editor. Not too shabby. I'd like a spell checker... for all my spill chickin' needs.

posting from an IM account

I've been interested in IMified for quite a while. As an IM platform it's got some very interesting features and widgets that one can add, such as this blogger widget. With two clicks after creating an IM account, I added a blogger widget to create this post. Seconds later I'm writing and you're reading. Nice!
